BRIGADA DO MAR is an environmental intervention project with three main areas of activity:

  1. Beach cleaning
  2. Environmental Education and Eco Team buildings
  3. Development cooperation

In 2009, the Brigada do Mar developed actions to protect biodiversity and carried out cleaning interventions in non-concessionary coastal areas. With the support of Grândola City Council every year in May, it carries out a 15-day cleaning during which 45 kilometers of the coastline between the beach of Melides and Troia are covered and decontaminated. The collected garbage is separated into: plastics, glass, undifferentiated and hazardous waste and then forwarded to competent entities to transform and reuse it. In 8 years more than 150 tons of waste have been collected.

The amount of garbage found by those who participate and the state of degradation of the landscape of the beaches where the Brigada do Mar operates is impossible to describe. Therefore, raising awareness and educating is an important step towards the effectiveness of this project! In this way throughout the year, the Brigada do Mar organizes the following activities:

  • Traveling exhibition, where photographs, testimonies and debris collected specifically for the purpose show the public what is hidden.
  • Lectures in schools, companies and associations where you share experiences and know-how.
  • Eco Team Buildings, where through environmental awareness ties, creates synergies and develops skills.

Cleanings in “urban” beaches as a form of mobilization and alert to the problem of marine litter.

VITAMIMOS Food Education Center emerged from a challenge launched by DNA Cascais, being the winner of the 1st Cascais Business Ideas Contest in 2007 (health category). The idea arose from the need to multiply initiatives for the prevention of childhood and juvenile obesity and Promotion of healthy lifestyles. The Vitamimos initiative was recognised in 2009 by the EsMais Academic Research Council, promoted by the Institute of Social Entrepreneurship, as a “High Potential Social Impact Initiative”. Since then, it has been presented with example and case study in several events, formations and publications related to social entrepreneurship.

Vitamimos pretend to intervene in the prevention of childhood and juvenile obesity, through the promotion of healthy eating habits and lifestyles.

“Chefes de Saúde” (Health chefs)

A number of diseases are associated with eating errors and less healthy lifestyles. Science proves that engaging children in food preparation has a positive impact on their food choices. That is why Vitamimos aims to transform children into authentic health experts with the “Chefs de Saúde” program. For this, we offer you the possibility of receiving in your school a food education program, which integrates other health promotion themes: physical activity, quality sleep, hygiene and feelings and emotions.

The Eco-Chef program aims to sensitize primary school students to the importance of making healthy food choices while simultaneously acting to protect the environment. The promotion of healthy food is associated with the promotion of conduits that contribute to environmental sustainability, in a logic of eco-nutrition, economic and ecological. Alarming data on childhood obesity and environmental pressure for food security from a growing population ground the intervention. Fruit of partnership with the Health Platform at the School of the City Hall of Cascais, the initiative is based on the methodology of Peer Education.

“World Carrot Lollipop”

It is an international project of Vitamimos that aims to raise awareness about the problems of obesity and diabetes. Carrots, which are generally very appreciated, are a sweet alternative and can be a symbolic example for combating the current excessive consumption of sugar.

“Nutritional Personal Shopper”

A nutritionist accompanies you in the supermarket shopping, helps you make purchases appropriate to your health and living need. A practical way to learn how to read nutritional labels, plan purchases, properly carry and store food.

Crowdfunding is a simple and recent way of raising funding for a project through a community that shares the same interests. PPL is a platform that brings together this network of entrepreneurs and their supporters. Our goal is to enable the immense potential of ideas that thrive in our community to become a reality through fundraising.

We want to promote the campaigns of people with talent and motivation in areas as diverse as social, artistic, cultural or sporting events. Do you want to release a CD of your new band or organise a concert of your favorite band? Maybe write a book? Or build a picnic park in your neighborhood? With PPL you can publicize your campaign and bring together the community that shares the same interest. If each member contributes a little support, together we can carry out the largest projects. This is the force of crowdfunding: small investments × large community = excellent projects! The PPL works simply and transparently, using the “all or nothing” mechanics.

The combination of old and new generates the common language which through creativity allows different generations to bond.Every four months we develop a new collection of homeware products inspired by traditional crafts our grannies are familiar with. Developing a new visual language, we mix old and new techniques, looking at new trends, materials and experimenting unusual colored materials. The final products are unique and a reflection of local culture.

SPEAK is a linguistic and cultural program built to bring people closer together – a crowdsourcing language and culture exchange between migrants and locals that breaks barriers, promotes multilingualism, equality and democratizes language learning. Anyone can apply to learn or teach any language or culture including those of the country where they are residing.

The courses in SPEAK are diverse and inspiring. Throughout this learning process, participants get to know other people, learn and explore common interests, break prejudices, misunderstandings and even promote comprehension as well as cooperation. Besides classes, there are social events aimed at creating a bond between participants and where there is room for dialogue, celebration and friendship.

Migrants, such as refugees, expats, foreign students and guest workers, face many difficulties when they arrive in a new country. Not being able to rely on a support network or simply not understanding the local language and culture creates misunderstandings and communication difficulties between migrants and locals. These xenophobic issues increase prejudices and racism situations, therefore contributing to a hostile environment within modern societies.

SPEAK helps solving all these issues. Also, it strengthens solidarity networks in communities, particularly between migrants and locals, by promoting relationships between people of different backgrounds, thus tackling a contentious issue that has a lot of negative externalities.

SPEAK also promotes the full participation of all individuals in society, making for stronger communities.

What is our utopia for a better world? Societies that integrate, value and promote cultural diversity. A world that recognizes that there are social problems, that are global and do not respect boundaries, and which solutions require the engagement of all humanity in its full diversity. How do we get closer to our vision? We help solving the problem of social exclusion of migrants and contribute to their integration in the cities where they live, with a language and culture exchange program that breaks the linguistic barrier and brings people of different origins together.

Quercus is a Portuguese nongovernmental organisation (ONGA) founded on October 31, 1985. It is an independent, non-partisan association of national scope, non-profit and made up of citizens who have gathered around the same interest for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources and in Defense of the Environment in general, with a view to sustainable development. The Association is known as Quercus because this is the common Latin name attributed to oaks, holm oaks and cork oaks, trees characteristic of the most evolved forest ecosystems that covered our country and that there are currently only very degraded relics.

Over the years, Quercus has been occupying in Portuguese society a place both irreverent and constructive in the defense of the multiple Causes of nature and the environment. Its scope of action now covers a number of thematic areas of environmental relevance, including, in addition to conserving nature and biodiversity, energy, water, waste, climate change, forests, sustainable consumption, environmental responsibility, among others. This specialized monitoring is largely supported by the work of various working groups and permanent projects. This status was progressively conquered through an attentive conduct to the real, without losing the fundamental point of reference of the principles, or moving away from the needs of complementing the critical denunciation with the effort to build consensus in Portuguese society, without which no effective Model of sustainable development will be possible in our country.

One of the characteristics of Quercus is its decentralization, through the 18 regional centers scattered throughout the country, including the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, which accompany the environmental reality and carry out awareness activities within its geographical radius. In 1992, Quercus was awarded the United Nations Global 500 Award and the honorary member of the Order of Prince Henry, awarded by the President of the Republic, Dr. Mario Soares.

The members of Portuguese ONGs concluded that it would be very interesting and possibly more effective if there was a mechanism to support the public discussion about CFP.

A few months later (on November 2009) PONG-Fishing was presented for the first time to general public. Its main initial goal was to follow and influence the CFP reform, although it was clear from the beginning that its work would go beyond this process in terms of thematic areas, geographical scope and time scale.
